June 2011 – Week 3

Meditation for the week of June 19, 2011

Triune for You

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:14)

There are lots of things about God that are confusing to us. If we could completely understand Him, He wouldn’t be God. One of the most difficult things for us to wrap our minds around is how He can be one God and yet three persons- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Sunday after Pentecost is designated “Holy Trinity Sunday.” It’s the only church holiday dedicated to a doctrine. Yet to spend our time only thinking about God as a triangle, a shamrock, or something else that is “three in one” would be to miss the point.

God is triune not to confuse you but to love you.

He loves you as a Father, as the one who created you, giving you your body and soul and still preserving them.

He loves you as the Son, who was made flesh and blood for you, who suffered, died and rose again for you.

He loves you as the Holy Spirit, who makes you holy in the holy church, through Holy Baptism, Holy Forgiveness, Holy Gospel and Holy Communion.

And yet He is still one God.

Having received this love from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we respond by worshipping Him as the triune God. The Athanasian Creed puts it like this, “And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity…” Because we believe in a triune God, we worship Him.

So spend some time this week meditating on the mystery of our Triune God, and the many ways that He loves you as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And then worship Him, praising and thanking Him for His love for you.

Our Weekly Prayer:
Please consider praying this prayer as part of your daily prayers.

Almighty and everlasting God, since you have given us, your servants, grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith, and to worship the true Unity in the power of your divine majesty, keep us also steadfast in this true faith and worship, and defend us from all our adversaries; for you, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen.
