Devotion and Prayer for Week of June 24, 2012

Meditation for the Week of June 24, 2012

Who Is this Guy?

Have you ever been in a situation where you have made a statement like that?  I can think of a couple of examples. I remember having a car that would not run whenever it rained.  It would do okay in a little sprinkle or a light shower, but if you got into some heavier rain or a wind driven thunderstorm and the car would not go!  The engine would run, but if you tried to move the car by pressing on the gas pedal, the engine would die.

It would start right up again, but if you put it in gear and pressed the gas pedal it would die.  You would just have to wait the rain out.

Needless to say, I took this car to garage after garage, mechanic after mechanic, dealership after dealership and nobody could ascertain the problem, or if they did, they couldn’t fix it.  Finally, I was at one dealership and we were spraying the car with hoses and finally it acted up and no one knew what to do.  But then a guy in a white shirt walked over, reached down in the engine compartment and twisted or turned something and said to put it in gear and it moved!  Then the guy just walked away.  And several people asked, “Who was that guy?”  It turned out he was a special engineer from the car company.  He knew exactly what needed to be done.  I have heard people tell similar stories about doctors and other repair people.

Jesus’ disciples asked that same question one night when they were out in a boat on the Sea of Galilee.  Jesus was asleep in the boat, and the sea got rough, the wind kicked up and the waves were smashing the little boat in all directions.  The disciples were scared.  Even as experienced fishermen they were encountering conditions that caused them to think they were going to drown.  And to make matters worse, Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat and unaware that they were in deep trouble.

Finally, in frustration they woke Jesus up and said to him, “Don’t you care if we drown?”  Jesus looked around and saw the winds and the waves and he said to the waves – Quiet – Be Still! And the wind died down and the sea became calm.  Jesus looked at the disciples and said, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”  The disciples responded and said, “Who is this (guy)? Even the wind and waves obey him.”

At this point, the disciples had not yet grasped that this Jesus, this guy, was in fact God. To be sure it was God with skin on, who looked like them, sounded like them and did and experienced all that they did, but at the same time was God.  All creation was under his control.  But they would learn much more about Jesus in the coming weeks, months and years.  Gratefully they have written this down so we too, can know Him.

He healed the sick and drove out demons – Who is this?

He raised people from the dead – Who is this?
He sacrificed his life on a cross to pay for the sins of all people – Who is this?

He himself rose from the dead to give all who believe in him life – Who is this?

He is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior who does everything needed for our salvation.

Our Weekly Prayer

Jesus, we are amazed, just as the disciples were, when we read of the healings, the driving out of demons, the miracles and the teachings.  We are so glad that you have revealed yourself to us in the Holy Scriptures.  Strengthen our faith and our understanding so that we never have to ask, “Who is this?”  May we always know you fully, completely and without hesitation as our Lord and Savior.  In your most gracious name we pray. Amen.
