Devotion and Prayer for Week of December 11, 2011

Meditation for the week beginning December 11, 2011

As we begin this Christmas Season, I have to confess that I am struggling with the idea of Joy. Just look at the news each night and there is angst and division, scandals, lies, and a woeful lack of people telling the truth. I look at the financial mess not only in Illinois, which no one seems to want to do anything about except raise taxes more and more, but there is also a financial mess in Washington, Rome, Athens, Madrid and nobody wants their special benefit or program cut but they want the other person to pay for it!  I am tired of reading about politicians who are getting rich, pointing the fingers at others, while lying or covering up or using politically correct speech to avoid telling the people they supposedly represent the truth. I could go on and on.  But it seems like I am not alone.  Poll after poll tells me that other Americans are pessimistic about the future of the country.  And the same holds true for people in many other countries.

So here we are entering the season of Joy, Yippee!

But what was it the angel said to those shepherds outside of Bethlehem some 2000 years ago?

Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be all for all people. For unto you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord …And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.”(Luke 2:11-12 & 14)

My problem is that I have been far too focused on the side of me that got caught up in the things of men! I needed to shift my focus to living life as a redeemed child of God.  Once I got my focus where it belonged, I was filled with Joy.  And that Joy is, just not joy at this time of the year, but is Joy all of the year.

I am joyful because of what the angel tells me through the shepherds.  That I have a Savior! A Savior who came to earth to live, to know what it is like to put up with corrupt politicians, financial chicanery, people not speaking the truth and who through it all, remained focused on the main thing.  Which is the relationship He had with God and doing God’s will, fulfilling the calling God had given Him when he sent Him down from heaven to earth,

For the baby who was sent to earth, the Savior came with a mission to save me, you, and all who believe in Him, as their Lord and Savior.  He did everything necessary for our salvation and kept His eyes focused on the cross and the empty tomb. And when we focus on Jesus, and what He did for us, we will have no problem being the most joyous people in the World.

“Joy, Joy, Joy, Praise we the Lord in Heaven on High!” (Chorus from “While By My Sheep I Watched”)

Our Weekly Prayer

Heavenly Father, I know that you are the source of my Joy!  You willingly provided your Son to be my Savior and gave me through Him the forgiveness of my sins and the promise of life eternal with You.  Help me to not dwell on earthly troubles, challenges or situations in my daily life.  Rather guide my thoughts and life to better follow your will and ways.  May I live with a joyous spirit and disposition knowing that I have a great God who loves me.  Amen
