Devotion and Prayer for Week of August 24, 2014

Meditation for the Week of August 24, 2014

“[Jesus] said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”                                                                                               Matthew 16:15-17

There are many opinions about Jesus. Some say that He was a teacher who advocated loving one’s enemies and doing good to all. Others say that He was a revolutionary who encouraged overthrowing the religious institution and all forms of tyranny. There are those who say that Jesus never existed, that He’s only a figment of peoples’ imaginations. These various opinions about Jesus’ identity are nothing new. Even those who walked the earth the same time that He did were divided on who He was. Some said that He was John the Baptist, others said He was Elijah, and still others said he was Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But those who knew Jesus, those who had heard His Word that He is the Son of God, they knew. His disciples had been shown that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

When Peter makes his great confession that Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ who has come to save His people, Jesus rejoices and blessed Peter for his confession of the truth. Jesus then teaches him that “flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” This is the truth for us as well. We don’t know who Jesus is because we’re cleverer or smarter than others. We haven’t figured out that Jesus is the Son of God because we live cleaner and better lives. We don’t know that Jesus is the Christ because we’ve made a decision for Him. Like Peter, we only know that Jesus is the Son of the living God because the Father has revealed this to us. God reveals His Son to us through the same way He revealed Jesus to the Apostles—through His Word. Through His Word and only through His Word does God show us who Jesus is: our Christ, our Redeemer, our Savior, the Son of God who comes to rescue us from sin and death.

It’s this truth about Jesus that the Church stands upon. These words of faith are the rock that the Church is built upon. And no matter how much the world rages against it, no matter how corrupt society becomes, no matter how much the devil plots and plans, nothing will prevail against these words of truth: “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The faith that clings to these words stands strong in the face of everything the enemy can throw against it. Thanks be to our Father that He has revealed this truth to us and to all the saints in the Church from the beginning of time to now.

Our Weekly Prayer

Almighty God, to know You is to have everlasting life. Grant that I may always know Your Son Jesus to be the way, the truth, and the life that I may boldly confess Him to be the Christ and follow Him into life eternal. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
