Devotion and Prayer for Week of November 25, 2012

Meditation for the Week November 25, 2012

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  Hebrews 13:8

Change – Can you name one thing in this world that is not changing?

The seasons change, as we are experiencing right now.  Tastes and fashions change.  Language undergoes gradual but inevitable change.  People themselves change.  Over time, whole societies—their values and morals—change.

Amidst all this change there is one constant.  Jesus Christ our dear Lord does not change.  He is the world’s Redeemer, the same yesterday and today and forever.  Who He is, He will always be.  What He has done, that will stand forever.  What a comforting truth for us!

We are now in the final week of the church year.  Another church year is nearly gone.  One year closer to being with the Lord.  The years come and the years go but Jesus is always the same.  As He was Savior to those who went before us, so He is Savior to us today, and so He will be Savior to those who come after us.  The glorious light shining from His cross extends forward and backward through the ages and into the future, illuminating the very ends of the earth, wherever the Gospel of salvation is proclaimed.  Nothing can extinguish that light.  It will endure into eternity.

Jesus wants all people to find rest and peace in Him.  That is why He came down from heaven.  That is why He laid down His life for our sins.  That is why He gives His Church the Gospel and the Sacraments, to bring His saving grace to those who do not yet know Him.  In a changing world Jesus wants everyone to know that there is one thing that does not change:  Jesus Christ and His love.

Our Weekly Prayer

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being the one constant in my life.  When I experience all kinds of changes, draw me close to You and remind me of Your unchanging love.  Amen.
